Thrifty Thursday: The Birthday Edition

Last week, I celebrated my Birth Week.

This is what the birth week means: I kick back! Meals aren't fancy, I socialize with my buds, I slack on my housework and I celebrate. I pull out my birth week card when the kids start bickering. My birth week commands peace in the home. We wouldn't want to spoil the moments with petty bickering, would we children?

My birth week is the occasion for everyone to be exceptionally kind to me. I skipped my work meeting, without any guilt. My manager was gracious, in fact, because I warned her, she wished me a happy birth month.

One of the benefits of birth weeks are the freebies. My favorite restaurant, which the Gman does not appreciate, is Not Your Average Joes. I love the funky food. They mix sweet and spicy together in so many cool combinations. My mouth is watering thinking of their buffalo mango pizza. Or their calypso shrimp. Or the bread with dipping oil. Or anything on their menu.

They celebrate my birth week also. I signed up for their emails and they sent me a coupon good for any entree and dessert. How sweet is that?

Of course, I went all out and ordered the grilled scallops over cous cous. YUM! Dessert was a sinful chocolate bomb thing. Not only was my delicious dinner free, I was with two very special friends. It was a great way to kick off my Birth Week.

Marriage Monday....Do you remember?

When she described the proposal, she was glowing. He led her to the back porch. Awkwardly, he pretended that wildlife had appeared and his eagle eyes were the only ones to see it. When he tried to point it out to her, she turned around to this.

He had perfectly orchestrated the moment. Music, lights and real fireworks. Thankfully she said "yes". For the rest of their lives, they will never forget the Christmas Eve of 2011.

This couple will be married next summer and they have a few years before they have to worry about the newness wearing off.

I wanted to include the challenge from Marriage Monday and encourage you to visit the blogs of other contributors. The hostess, Chrysalis, emails an invite to participants a few days before Monday. This week's topic has been brewing for a few weeks. In fact since Christmas. Below is a portion of her invitation.

Life certainly has its ups and downs—it has busy, exciting times and slow, dull, normal times. Marriage is the same way. Remember when we were young and full of love? It seemed that we never ran out of new things to discover with (and about) each other.

After a few years of "wedded bliss" however, sometimes a depressing sameness can settle in. Unfortunately, keeping family life running smoothly (and paying for it all) takes so much energy that many couples have nothing left over for their friendship. During those stress-filled seasons, boredom and apathy can easily infect a marriage. Have you been there? Are you there now? What are you doing to inject fresh vitality into your relationship?

My thoughts on avoiding complacency and the marriage doldrums. One word:

Remember!

Remember the things that first attracted you to your husband. Was it his strong faith? His great looks? His kind actions? His bold witnessing? His sports ability? The way his treated his family? His great sense of humor? Whatever is was that first caught your eye and kept it, think on these things. Don't fall into the pattern of dwelling on his faults, shortcomings or things he lacks. Avoid fiction or film that glamorizes or fictionalizes other men. This will poison your attitude and demotivate you in making your own effort to improve your marriage.

Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8

To follow my own advice, I just take a look at my sweet hubby in this photo and my heart still goes pitter-patter. It's not just the hunk in the uniform, it's the memories we had that day.

Remember the vows you made. When we were married about 10 years, we had some tough times. I made this plaque using my computer, stationary and a simple frame. I know the Gman appreciates it. Currently, he displays it right by his bedside. It's important to remember why we say those words. Hard times will come. Finances, sickness and family conflicts and a host of other hardships. This vow acknowledges yes, they are going to happen and declares that I will be there for them, resisting the fight or flight urge that tempts everyone.

Remember God. Whether you married in the faith or came to know God after your marriage, God will help. If you feel like things are dull and want to break out of that rut, pray about it. Ask God to help you appreciate your spouse, pray for him, and believe that things can change.

Remember, you will not always have a home full of kids, bills and stress. Perhaps you need inspiration for a date night, or just the commitment to having a date night. God willing, you will be growing old together and the best is yet to come.

The Post In Which I get Political

I have been watching the Republican primaries closely. I don't usually blog about politics, frankly, they bore me and the last thing I would ever want to do is bore anyone who reads my blog.

There is something that really is bothering me.

Am I the only one who is bothered by the sudden increase in Newt Gingrich's popularity? His winning South Carolina shows me that so many are willing to overlook the personal morality of our leaders. Have the religious right lost their hope? Have we really decided that personal morality doesn't affect their decision making? Herman Cain's endorsement of him only sickens me more. Of course, what can I expect? Birds of a feather flock together.

I consider my vote a privilege. I'm so tired of holding my nose and voting for the lesser evil. I will not hand it over to an unrighteous/unrepentant pervert. Yes, I said it. PERVERT. Last time I checked the the seventh commandment was still in the Bible. Newt has a pattern of breaking covenants. Especially during the times of sickness. The times when the rubber meets the road in your commitments.

Let's say the shoe was on the other foot and Newt was battling cancer or some other illness. Would his wives stay with him? I don't know. After watching the beauty of my dad, my friends and countless others taking their vows serious, I can't help feeling disgusted every time I hear Newt's voice. His skilled political sound bites are like tinkling brass, knowing his actions.

Now before you start thinking Terri G. is so self-righteous, and how can she judge him? Let's make believe he became president.

Let's look at Callista. Is this the first lady you want your daughters to emulate? She's the woman who carried on with a married man for years. She knew he was married. She didn't care. He was bound for a great political future and she was planning to be a part of it. At any cost.

If she traveled in my social circles, I'd be sure to stay by my husband's side when she was around. I mean really, she may secretly dream of being married to a hunky electrician after a few months of stalking by the press. Or if Gingrich fails in his bid for president, she may not have as much motivation to stick around.

I'm not talking about being paranoid, I'm talking about being wise. Proverbs 7 warns us about the type of people Callista and Newt are. Their end is not pretty.

They certainly aren't the people I want in power. Regardless of what may be going on in this country, we still live in the best country in the world. I'm hoping we are blessed with a great leader.

Z-Guides to the Movies~ The Green Berets, A Review

As a member of the TOS Homeschool crew, this year I am reviewing many homeschooling products that I have received for free. I am not paid to say nice things about the products, but I am obligated to use the product and share my honest opinions with you. In today's review, our whole family, minus the Little Guy used this product together.

What is a Z-Guide?

Z-Guides are a great way to enhance your history, geography and/or English lessons using activities centered around a motion picture. The product I received is in a download format, giving me the freedom to print the pages we need for our study. The guide includes a synopsis, historical background, review questions, and numerous activities pertaining to the movie. You can read more about Z-Guides here. Z-Guides to the Movies ~ The Green Berets, A Review

Paperboy chose The Green Berets starring John Wayne for our next Z-Guide. A quick word of caution; let the kids choose together. Random and I were not crazy about this movie. A war movie would not have been our choice. My difficulties in following the movie were relieved by the synopsis in the guide, it cleared many things up for me.

Because I am an honest blogger, I have to say this was one of my toughest reviews to do. Not because I did not like the product, I love them, I own five Z-Guides. It is because the movie associated with this guide bothered me. The similarities between Vietnam and today's Iraq situation are too close. My heart was broken thinking of all of the deaths and the end results of each conflict. But since this isn't my political blog, I'll get back to the Z-Guide.

Things I loved about the guide:

The Movie Synopsis was very thorough. I missed many of the key points of the movie. The author does a fantastic job in the description.
The 25 Review Questions are open ended, requiring detailed answers. A few of them stumped me, but thankfully they provided an answer key.
The Compare and Contrast exercise was challenging and thought provoking.
The Worldview Activity is an import activity to keep the dialogue going with your children about moral choices.

Things we could have lived without:

The Crossword Puzzle, asking the same questions orally worked for our family. Crosswords are loved or hated, it reminds me of busywork.

Zeezok publishing has created an incredible product for those who want to spice up their history lessons. The guide gives parents the tools they need to create an interesting week long discussion of a historical event using a movie. Because the ugliness of the war, mature scenes and intense propaganda of the movie was difficult for me, the grown-up, to follow, I recommend The Green Berets and it's Z-Guide for older high school students who are studying the Vietnam War.

Thrifty Thursday Homeschool Style: Selling Your Used Curriculum

If you have noticed on the top corner of my blog, there is a new bright yellow sign. I've linked up my homeschool supplies that I am selling. In my purposeful new year, I am taking a deep look at the homeschool supplies and asking what's the point of keeping this? Will I eventually need it? Do I really need so many books? Can I make enough selling it to be worth my while? My buddy Sharon and I have teamed up forces to rid ourselves of this extra baggage.

I have a little experience. I have been doing this on and off for about 9 years. I used to be the customer, but now I'm the sales lady. I have only been ripped off once. More on that later. I began selling and witnessing on eBay years ago.

Ten things I have learned about buying and selling homeschool books online:

My favorite places to sell are homeschoolclassifieds, Amazon, Well Trained Mind forums, and Ebay. There are pros and cons to each site.
Homeschool Classifieds is the easiest to shop. They list things by publisher and alphabetically. The sellers are given feedback and it is free to list items. There is a limit, but you can earn credits by posting local field trips or activities. You hammer out the details after contacting the seller. They also have a curriculum wanted section. I do contact shoppers about their wanted items. I find 70% of the time they are not willing to pay enough for the item to make it worth my time, effort and shipping fees. If I after selling, I end up with a few bucks, it would be more ideal to donate it at our local used homeschool sale.
Amazon can be very simple, but they take a larger commission. What I love about Amazon is that you enter the isbn # and they already have a photo, reviews and prices of the book. Some items list high there so I always check first. They deposit money into my bank twice a month. Their system is easy to navigate.
Ebay is the best place to sell Teaching Textbooks and other choice curriculum. Just do a completed listing search and see what the going prices are. Math-U-See sells high there too. I chose not to do eBay this week because I don't want to post pictures and write ads. Check prices there if you are buying and selling. Be sure to watch out for high seller shipping charges, my pet peave.
The Well Trained Mind forums can be a great place to buy. Unless you post frequently, it takes a while to post 50 conversations and be eligible to post in their for sale forum. That does weed out the scammers because you can check out the sellers posts and see if they are really homeschooling. They have an extensive wanted list also. Anyone can view that.
If your local homeschool group hosts a sale, that is a good place to start shopping. I have found that I end up pricing things low or giving them away because I know the families. I do however have the chance to swap with others or share why I loved or hated a curriculum. It is a lot of effort pricing and preparing the books.
Postage can eat your profits really quick. I will give you an example of how I just took a hit. I usually ship items media mail to an US address. The price is between $1.70 and $5.85. I just sold some blocks which do not qualify for media rate and shipping was over $15. So after paypal fees and shipping, I only made about $20 for an item that cost me over $45.
Paypal fees. Paypal does take a small handling fee from transactions. I think it's better than waiting for someone to mail a check and wait for it to clear. But consider adding and extra buck or two if you accept paypal.
As a strict policy, I do not deal with selling or buying anything out of the country. The only deal that went sour was from our fine neighbor to the north. I was out fifty bucks. Now, that being said, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it may be a scam. Also, when posting a looking to buy ad, be careful. Dishonest people scan the ads and offer crazy deals. It doesn't always happen, but be careful. In my communications with buyers or sellers, I use my blog site in my signature. That way they can read who I am and know, I'm a little odd, but not a thief.
Buying used curriculum can be a great way to save money. I have tried expensive programs, decided I hated them and resold them easily. Make sure they are from a non-smoking, non-pet home in case you have allergies or just serious sensory issues like myself.

Happy New Year With Purpose

I'm not the new year's resolution type. I always fail at that. My only tangible New Year's goal this year is to drink more water. I know I'm keeping the bar low, but I'm succeeding and it's been four days.

Some people chose a word or a scripture to define or apply to their lives at the beginning of a new year. I have been pondering this. Applying a 'word' to my life is my best bet to see much needed change in my life.

What's my word?

PURPOSE

I want to seek God for His purpose in my life.

This means praying more. Yeah!

I want to plan my days to accomplish things with purpose.

This translates to lists and schedules. Yawn!

I want to speak with purpose.

This could mean silence. Ssshhh!

I want to be surrounded by things that have a purpose.

This means purging, blessing others, chucking or selling. Nice!

Asking what's the point of this? Can set me free.

Free from wasted time, gossip, meaningless activities, and clutter.

They have no purpose in my life.

At the risk of being vain and pointless, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Can we just hit the pause button?

When Random was a little guy, he had a hard time telling the difference between the computer screen world and his reality. He immediately became hooked on the computer and it's array of new words. Those words ingrained themselves into his ever growing vocabulary and he creatively used them. When he needed to use the bathroom, he would announce to his friends while playing outside:

"Pause button, I need to go potty."

This flashback came to me as I was reading John Acuff and his idea of "pausing" a blog.

This isn't a long pause, just a chance to 'reblog' or recycle top posts.

Now there are two ways of choosing your top posts.

I could pick my favorites or I could pick the top viewed ones.

Since it's my blog, I'm going to pick my favorites.

Did you know this week is national Poison Prevention Week?
In honor of that I would like to share some helpful advice.

Ten things that will poison your marriage:

First, I have to add a disclaimer to this post. I have not tried all of these poisons, only nine of them. Thankfully, I didn't ingest enough to cause death nor suffer long term effects from these toxic behaviors.

Hang around with women who constantly belittle their husbands.
Think of the money you both earn as separate.
Let the children play you against each other, this can last long into adulthood.
Stop serving each other.
Ignore your personal appearance and practice poor hygiene.
Avoid dates or time alone.
Don't care about anything they deem important.
Spend too much time with your extended family and friends.
Never forget past sins.
Criticize at every opportunity, publicly will increase the speed of the toxicity.

If you feel like you need a detox. Don't despair. Things can change right now.

Here is my not-so-secret home remedy...

From the King James Bible, 1 John 1:19:

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

I've blogged before about my over-achieving friends. When you are surrounded by greatness, once in a while you reap the benefits of their excellence. In this case, I received some soaps, in exchange for my honest opinion of Blossom Soap Studio's wares. When it comes to Maureen, this Etsy shop owner, even though she raises the bar, you have to love her. Not only is she adorable, she creates lovely things.

She's crafty, not the beguiling one, the cute one. At our church functions, even her food is adorable. She has an eye for pretty. So when her soap business "accidentally" took off, I wasn't surprised. How could you not fall in love with her soaps?

She's a secret blogger that hasn't realized it. She has a story behind her soaps. You must read her take on "Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope."

She gave me one of these adorable sunflowers. It's right above my kitchen sink and smells delicious. I had to resist the urge to taste it. I have to admit, I didn't even want to use it. I wanted it to stay pretty. But that wouldn't make for an honest review. I needed to use the product. And I did. Now I have to fight the OCD compulsion to wash my hands frequently.

This bar sits in my guest bathroom and still looks pretty after many uses.

Maureen's soaps are not only for girls. She has created some manly soaps that are perfect stocking stuffers. This power bar for the shower is a one-of-a-kind. This rustic shave soap and brush will be perfect for the Gman.

Thrifty Thursday: Christmas and Thrift, Ten Things

If you were able to stand yesterday's post and my whining about Christmas, thank you for returning. Thanks to Little Guy, who has been singing real Christmas carols non-stop, I feel better already. My home is decorated and I am a little more encouraged about Christmas approaching.

Ann Voscamp wrote another great post yesterday. It has encouraged me to get over my ego, my mice, and my clutter. I encourage you to head over there after you read this post.

I'm a person who learns by mistake, so I am well-schooled in today's topic. Let's talk about Thrift and Christmas. I thought I'd post ten ways not to be Thrifty this Christmas. And Yes, I am guilty of all of these. I've gotten overwhelmed by the Christmas Animal at times and forgotten about Jesus.

Ten Ways To Not Be Thrifty For Christmas

Tell yourself it's Christmas as an excuse to overspend, just pull out the credit card.
Buy gifts for co-workers, co-worshipers, or neighbors that will end up donated or at the next yard sale.
Get your kids the latest electronic gadgets, that are unwanted in few months.
Purchase convenience foods for each of the parties you will be attending.
Hide the gifts you bought earlier in the year so well that you can't find them on Christmas Eve.
Neglect to teach your children the true meaning of Christmas and train them to be receivers.
Buy all of your relatives gifts because you don't want them to think you are cheap.
Procrastinate mailing gifts and end up paying 3 times the cost of the gift to mail them.
Forget to buy for someone and find yourself in a stupor, shopping on Christmas Eve.
Decorate your home with the latest trendy seasonal decorations. Reindeer are so passe. Light your home up with a gizzilion lights that are not LED and don't forget a few blow-up lawn decorations.

Pour Your Heart Out: Christmas? Bah! Humbug!

Today's post is linked up to Pour Your Heart Out from Shell at Things I Can't Say. That's a regular feature where bloggers let it rip. They blog about something that has been weighing on their mind or just plain irritating them. It's like a regular therapy session without the bill. If you read the other posts, you may actually start to feel better about yourself. You might say things like "Thank God! I'm not married to him." or "She did what?" or you may think to yourself. "She hit the nail right on the head. I feel the same way too!" Anyhow, here's my ~~little whine~~ pour your heart out.

It was the ~~night~~ month before Christmas and all through the house...
I've been thinking about Christmas and I've readied my home for the decorating tonight, but I am far from prepared myself. And I don't think I'll gather enough spirit for the holidays. As a grateful Christian, I should be excited for this glorious time. But no....There are ~~a few~~ three specific things that are standing in my way of this holiday joy.

The beautiful family cards have started arriving in the mail. Everyone clean, smiling, in the same location and looking happy. I love those cards. But they remind me of my failures. The only time this year we were dressed nice and together was at a funeral. Not the Kodak family time. Now that I, the pro-procrastinator, finally have time to consider the photo. Things are in place. Vika has returned to the States. But my hormones have left their mark on my face. The current pimples on my face resemble Mt. Vesuvius. When covered with make-up they look like the snow-capped Andes Mountain region. If I was so inclined I would learn some better make-up techniques from this sister-in-the-acne-trenches. But who has time? At this point my loved ones will receive Christmas wishes only. Maybe a New Years Card?

What to get the little darlings for Christmas? As I descend in the depths of the basement, I observe the piles of unused gifts from the past years. I wonder how I got sucked into this American consumerism and became such a greedy person who hoards so much. I get a little green, not with envy, but with a sudden urge not to add more garbage to the planet. I see the excesses and the waste and almost get sick thinking about it. I think a purging and cleaning of the basement would be a great Christmas gift. I can re-gift the gifts to a different child. I can reload the stockings with knick-knacks. Oh wait, they're much to sharp for that trick.
But my thoughts of re-gifting and cleaning the basement are quickly clouded.

Not A Creature Was Stirring Not Even A....Mouse. I've discovered there are well-fed mice in my basement. They have neatly devoured a whole bag of cereal. I am not scared of rodents. I am scared of their droppings. The thoughts of them feasting on my pantry and dropping wherever they please gives me the eeby-geebies. My zeal for my basement overhaul has just been squashed. After the Gman rids the basement of the varmints, I will revisit that thought. It's not a very Christmassy thought. But it could become a tradition.

SO I will put the gifts and the photos out of my mind. Tonight, I'll focus on the fun of decorating. Maybe next week I'll get excited about the Christmas Season. If I can just get the thought of mice droppings out of my mind.

Artistic Pursuits, Senior High Book One is a comprehensive art program created for high school students to complete independently. This program, written by Brenda Ellis, skillfully exposes the student to four facets of art in each lesson. It is a weekly course designed for the student to build a visual vocabulary, learn art appreciation and history, practice a technique and do a project applying the knowledge learned in the previous lessons. What we thought about it!

Paperboy was excited to begin this book. He has always enjoyed drawing on his own. This course could work well in a group setting, but is perfect for the lone artist.

The inclusion of European art history was right up his alley. The assignment to draw a scene from St. George and the Dragon was a perfect lesson for any teenage boy. Of course, Mom would love a still life of a bowl of fruit, but maybe next time. Paperboy loved the way the book was directed at him. There is no teacher manual, thus no need for Mom to be over his shoulder instructing him in the ways of fine art. He gave it a thumbs up!

What does Mom think about it?

I was really impressed with the variety of each lesson. Brenda Ellis has an incredible ability to tie in so many layers of learning in a simple art lesson. Not only does this book teach students art and techniques, it teaches student the necessary skills of observation. The objectives of each lesson are stated and I appreciate the Look Back questions. The student must reflect on if their project included the elements of the lesson.

Using Senior High Book One and Book Two will definitely fulfill the requirements for two credits in fine arts. At the end of the book, there are specific instruction for grading work, offering credit and building a portfolio.The portfolio that Paperboy is working on will be something to treasure for years.

How can you get your hands on this book?

This and the other 9 books in the series are available from the website Artistic Pursuits. This 89 page book sells for $42.95. It is non-consumable, which means you can reuse it with other students. How thrifty is that? You will need some basic supplies such as various drawing pencils, pads, a vinyl eraser and a metal sharpener for this course.

Five Question Friday: The Holiday Edition

All is quiet around here so I thought I'd sneak in a blog post. Pops is out shopping, the Gman is at the trampolines with 5 boys, and Grandma is napping.
Happy belated Thanksgiving! I'm the least sentimental person I know, I missed a chance to send Thanksgiving Day wishes to the kind souls who take a moment to read my ramblings. I truly am thankful for you. If you have never read five question Friday, you're in for a treat. This is where I reveal my deepest and darkest secrets or random things about me that you may have never known or cared to know about. It's like a little game, meet the blogger. 1. Is there a special dish you prepare that you are famous for?

Sadly, no. I am one of those Moms who cook to feed the masses. I battle with special diets, picky eaters and major carnivores here. But I humbly admit, my split pea soup has been known to be praised and adored by my friend Cathy.

2. Did you go Black Friday shopping?

Sadly, no. I usually love to go. Since I am spending time in the land of chain stores this weekend, the possibilities are endless. But I am having a mental block. I'm only obsessed with what iPad I can get me for Christmas. Now that's really missing the point. My kids have above and beyond all that they need. Teens with jobs buy their own gizmos. Little guy is on a dinosaur kick, which is not the hot item sold on black Friday. So I'm taking a break this year.

3. What are your strangest holiday traditions?

I don't really have strange traditions. Thanksgiving is different each year because we take turns hosting and traveling. But for Christmas, one thing that may seem strange is that my kids were never ones to wake up early on Christmas. It must be the homeschool thing. That works for the Gman and I since we usually stay up late wrapping.

4. Pecan or pumpkin pie?

Neither, I love apple pie. This year we had a wonderful pie called lemon surprise. It's like a lemon meringue with whipped cream instead of meringue. To answer the question, my boys love pumpkin, so we always have one.

5. When will you put up your Christmas tree?

Usually the first Sunday in December. Now this is where I do get sentimental. I fawn over the homemade ornaments and the decorations given to us by loved ones. I reminisce over the ornaments picked up on various vacations. I carefully fluff out the lovely FAKE tree with the lights already on it. WAIT! Now that's my strange holiday tradition, especially for those who live in the Northeast. I have a fake tree and I'm not ashamed.

Marriage Monday: An Ode to my Mother-in-Law

I was thrilled when I heard this month's topic would be in-laws. In my usual state of confusion, I forgot to post this a few weeks ago. With Thanksgiving coming up, perhaps now is the right time. If you will be spending time with your out-laws or in-laws, treasure it.

My mother-in-law died of cancer in 2004. A few weeks before Little Guy hit made his dramatic entrance into the world, I was unable to travel for the funeral because of my advanced pregnancy and a nasty sickness. I clearly remember going to a doctor I had never met, getting a throat culture and blubbering like a baby to him about how much I would miss her. A few weeks later, I had the opportunity to assure him that I'd be o.k.

Now don't get me wrong here, I understand the victory of death as a Christian. I knew Anne was through suffering and in the presence of God. I was just crying for myself. My sister-in-law asked for a letter or a memory for me to send along. This was my pre-blogging life. I was long-winded. I needed to remember her and write it down. I'm posting it unedited except for name changes.

To my Mother-in-law:

I want to thank you for all you have done and shown me in the 12 years I have had the privilege of knowing you. I married your only son and therefore I inherited the title of favorite daughter-in-law. I am blessed, my close friends even admitted their jealousy. They loved you and wished to have you for their own mother-in-law. When you visited us, we did everything together. You took the time to get to know all of my friends. You joined us for concerts, sporting events and even let us take you on almost every tourist attraction in the Northeast. You never mentioned if you were too tired or if we were pushing you too much. You gave of yourself unselfishly.

You had your priorities right. You wanted to be with your family. You invested your time into your family. There was always time for another story to be read to the boys or another game of checkers or Uno. You showed me motherhood, in your sharing the tales of raising my husband. You loved him unconditionally. You encouraged his passions. You have shown me tolerance, not for sin, but for adventure. You told me how you cringed while driving from the mice factory with a car load of mice so the Gman could feed his snakes. But you did it! You let the Gman develop his interests without your inflicting your own opinions. Because of you, I don’t say no when Paperboy and Random find a snake. You let him pursue boyhood interests while growing into a man. You raised a son that knows how to enjoy his family.

You showed your commitment to Christ to my family. You were faithful to read Gods Word daily. You prayed. You prayed for your family continually. You were committed to your church. While visiting us you joined us in our commitment to our church. You desired to know our family of believers. You and I would take time to go out with the ladies when you visited. On the telephone, you often would ask how is so and so. You showed concern for my friends even as your health was failing. You had also showed Len and others Christ’s love in action daily. When Len had the stroke you were there for him. You were such a hard worker. You got up early enough to get him dressed and ready before you had to get ready for work. There were bills to be paid and you faced it. You comforted him in his last days.

You had the gift of diplomacy. You were the peace maker. You had the kind words to soften the situation. You had the ability to smooth the awkward conversations. You also had the spunk and the certainty of your faith. On your trips to our home, we had many hours while the Gman was working to reminisce, share and even debate. You had the skill of discussing issues without letting them get personal. We could debate politics or doctrine and still remain close. You could artfully change the subject, you knew neither of us would change our minds, and you made sure there were no hard feelings.

Another way you demonstrated your love for me and my family was in your thoughts. Each trip north, you would bring a small gift for me and the kids. Just to say “I was thinking of you when we weren’t together”. You even showed my brother’s wife, and their children that same thoughtfulness. Your small gestures of love touched her life. You are already missed. But you have left your many gifts with us. I will guard them as treasures. I will try to pass on these qualities to your grandchildren. I will keep them fresh in my mind, when facing another parenting obstacle. I will think of you as I read in Proverbs. “Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband (also), and he praises her: Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all. Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.”

You were a wonderful mother-in-law and I thank God for the time He gave us together. I will love and miss you, but I know we will see each other again because of Christ.

While our children are in the high school years, it is easy for them to get overwhelmed with the amount of activities on their plate. Driver's ed, scouts, church activities, sports, schoolwork, jobs, and volunteer opportunities can take up much of their time. Meanwhile, they need to be preparing to take the P.S.A.T. and S.A.T. tests. College Prep Genius has made it easy for students to train for this important test at home on their own schedule.

This is not just training our students how to get high scores. It teaches the how, why, when, what and where's of the entire testing process. This very thorough and practical program will give your students the confidence they need as they approach the tests. I wish I had a program like this available to me during high school. Just understanding the philosophy of the tests can help your test-phobic students to face the test with confidence.

Thrifty Thursday and the Feingold Diet

Any time I discuss the Feingold diet with others, inevitably the high cost of food comes up. With a little creativity and work, one can easily implement the diet without over-spending.

Ten ways I purchase approved foods without going broke:

When a Feingold food item is on sale, I hoard. Because the products are not full of preservatives, this works best with frozen items, like our favorite ice cream. Also pantry items that are sealed can be bought in bulk. I have been spotted with a cart full of cereal. I'm not ashamed, just thrifty.
Shop fruits and vegetables in season. Sorry son, we only eat watermelon in the summer. Spending 89 cents a pound for bland watermelon just doesn't work here.
Health and beauty products are great for stocking up. Especially sun screens at the end of the season. Our pale white bodies go through sunscreen faster than it can expire.
Baking my own cookies, brownies and cakes is always cheaper than box mixes or store bought. I freeze individual cookies, rice crispy treats, brownies and cakes for lunches.
I shop at different stores for certain items. This is never convenient, but knowing where to find each thing at the lowest price helps.
Occasionally, I make a pilgrimage to Whole Foods. I have to put on blinders and avoid all of the tempting displays. They carry many store brand staples that are reasonably priced. While there, I stock up on chocolate chips, marshmallows, hot chocolate, peanut butter and waffles. I have been known to put in an order with my fellow blogger, Vika, who shops there regularly, that eliminates all of my impulse purchases.
Trader Joe's has made our life incredibly easier. I find their cereals are consistently low priced and without the added BHT in the packaging. Did I mention the fun Little Guy has finding the crab? This creative trick traps mothers in Trader Joe's until their kids scour the entire store looking for the plastic crab. That calls for my secret weapon. STICK TO THE LIST.
I plan ahead. Anytime I leave the house for more than a few hours with Little Guy, I have a lunch box packed with acceptable foods. Running into a convenience store to find a chemical free snack is an unpleasant experience. Now that Frito Lay will not co-operate with Feingold in filling out food questionnaires, I can't fall back on our old time favorite, unnamed corn chip.
Keeping up with the new items and re-reading my food lists. I will discover some foods that I didn't realize were acceptable. Fortunately, companies are realizing that consumers don't need or want chemicals in their foods and are responding to that.
I order some groceries online. This is where the man in the brown truck shows up, drops a few boxes and I have to resist my urge to hug him. Did I ever confess how tired I am of grocery shopping? The Gman is the only one to get my hugs for his weekly Trader Joe's trips.

But here is where the shameless advertising comes in. I shop at Vitacost every few months to stock up on vitamins, snacks and cereals. They have the best prices and usually free shipping. High School Latin is ideally taught in a co-op setting. Our homeschool group offered this for years. Now that I have high schoolers, it's not an option. This First Form Latin would work best in a group setting, but if that is not possible, it meets the need of a full year of Latin. The materials included, equipped me, but I still would love to hire a Latin teacher. The teacher's manual with it's scripting is exactly what I needed to overcome my phobia of Latin. Excellence in Literature: a Review

Today's review is Excellence in Literature published by Everyday Education. Introduction to Literature is the first of a five-year English course for students in grades 8 to 12. This is available from Everyday Education as a downloadable eBook for $27. If you must buy an actual notebook, it is available for $29.00 plus $4.95 shipping and handling.

What does this course cover? In the words of Janice Campell, the author:

"Introduction to Literature is a college-preparatory literature and composition course. Focus works, including novels, short stories, poems, and drama, have been selected for literary quality, and for their place in the historical development of literature. Context readings provide background information about the author, the historical period, and the literary and artistic context of the focus work.

Students will gain an understanding of the development of literature and will practice the skills of close literary analysis through essays, approach papers, and other evaluative writing. You may learn more about how I chose the literature for Excellence in Literature in this blog post."

Our experience:

Because of the heavy work load that both my boys are experiencing this year, they only tackled the first chapter. Chapter one included an excellent variety of short stories, including my all time favorite The Ransom of Red Chief. Because Random has an online English class already, which happened to be covering literary analysis, he used the same texts. He only adapted his writing to the assignments in his current course. The timing was perfect. Paperboy loved the reading, but struggled with the writing, which wasn't surprising. My hope is to see improvement as we continue in the course.

I must note that the author Janice Campell cares about the success of this program. Her introduction to the program was thorough and written to the student. When the guide recommended other sources which I do not own, I immediately felt frustration as a reviewer. I emailed my dilemma to the author and she quickly replied with encouragement and helpful links.

I have to admit, I feel overwhelmed at the thought of teaching literary analysis to my sons. This course is something we will slowly work our way through this year. This course requires at least an hour a day, carving that out during the past few months was a challenge. My writing phobic son has enjoyed the selections, but will continue to need intensive coaching from his mother. I highly recommend using this with upper level students unless your children happen to have a passion for literature and writing.

Who would win? Gee, I never thought of that!

When a child begins to think outside the box, it is a blessing when mother can take time to observe it.

Little Guy has compelled me to slow down. Although, I was cleaning because ~~I wanted to bless my family~~ of company coming, I forced myself to stop and play checkers. Now, I can't help but stop and write his words. I know if I don't, I will forget this moment in our life. No, it is not the great achievements, I will write about. It is the preciousness of discovery and thoughts, deep thoughts. Funny thoughts. Thoughts of a future archaeologist. Thoughts of a child discovering this world through reading and photos. Thoughts of the child who once announced, I hate books.

I am so grateful to come downstairs in the morning to find him on the recliner with a book in his hand.

I praise God as his eyes light up while he retells 'My Father's Dragon'.

He anxiously awaits the opening of the library on Monday, I give thanks for that.

On Thursday, when my week had gone on too long, I let everyone know. "I keep thinking this is Friday." Little guy who appeared to be engrossed in a video game looked up and gave me some sage advice. "Go to sleep now, wake up at midnight and for the next 24 hours you will be right."

I was tempted to do just that.

I laughed a deep belly laugh when he announced he was King Kong after getting his pajamas on.

I told him I was Fay Wray. When he learned who she was, he belly laughed and still wanted to be King Kong.

"I need to wear these because my feet get cold at night."

The daily questions continue...

I always stop to answer questions. The day will arrive when they don't ask as many.

I soak them in.

"Which one would win ankylosaurus or a komodo dragon?" Oh, you have stumped me. I need more information, son. Of course, I have never really thought about that. Besides, I have never seen and ankylosaurus operate. "Can you give me some more information?"

"The komodo dragon has a secret weapon, a poison, that can kill in 30 minutes."

"The ankylosaurus has an armored body and has a club tail. It is even safe from a tyrannosaurus rex."

I guess the ankylosauruas. "Wrong!" he says. "It would be a tie."

You can learn much from little ones.

I may not have my lizard and dinosaur facts strait, but I am fascinated by my little instructor.

Marshall Publishing: George Washington Carver Movie

Marshall publishing carries a series of educational Dvd's for homeschoolers. We had a chance to enjoy George Washington Carver, His Life and His Work. While this was geared to older students, I do think all ages would be inspired by this movie.

When Random and I began watching, he commented on how 'old fasioned' it seemed. Little Guy was glued to it. This movie is not flashy, but 30 minutes of incredible information. It begins with beautiful nature scenes and quotes from George W. Carver. The fascinating history of his life pursuing education is told while using footage of each location he lived in. It was like following a museum docent around the country. The film used different voices to quote significant people in Carver's life. I loved the blend of nature, history, music and narration to tell the story of this incredible American. I claimed many of the inspirational quotes for my life and will be placing them on bathroom mirrors in my home. Here are just a couple I adore:

There is no short cut to achievement. Life requires thorough preparation - veneer isn't worth anything.

I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in.

This story piqued my interest as a blogger.

I was just asking myself why do I blog? I came up with the usual answers.

Because it's my hobby and I love it.

So I can testify of the goodness of God.

Because everyone once in a while someone tells me, "I read your blog".

It's cheaper than therapy.

Because I committed to review a product and I follow through, unless it is hokey historical fiction. Then I procrastinate blogging.

Japan Needs You!

10,000 Free Round-Trip Tickets to Japan

If you’ve ever wanted to visit Japan, this may be your chance.
In a desperate attempt to lure tourists back to a country plagued by radiation fears and constant earthquakes, the Japan Tourism Agency’s proposed an unprecedented campaign – 10,000 free roundtrip tickets.
The catch is, you need to publicize your trip on blogs and social media sites.
The number of foreign visitors to Japan has dropped drastically, since a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami triggered a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Power plant in March. Nearly 20,000 people have been confirmed dead, while more than 80,000 remain displaced because of radiation concerns. In the first three months following the triple disasters, the number of foreign visitors to Japan was cut in half, compared with the same time in 2010. The strong Japanese currency has made matters worse.
The tourism agency says it plans to open a website to solicit applicants interested in the free tickets. Would- be visitors will have to detail in writing their travel plans in Japan, and explain what they hope to get out of the trip. Successful applicants would pay for their own accommodation and meals. They would also be required to write a review their travel experiences, and post it online.
“We are hoping to get highly influential blogger-types, and others who can spread the word that Japan is a safe place to visit,” said Kazuyoshi Sato, with the agency.
The agency has requested more than a billion yen to pay for the tourism blitz. If lawmakers approve the funding, Sato says visitors could begin signing up as early as next April.

Wordful Wednesday: Columbus, Over Achievers and Organized Gluttony

I've mentioned before that I attend the First Church of the Over-Achievers. You know the one where nothing is done without ~~days of preparation~~ a little planning? On Monday, our family had a chance to step back in time to celebrate two important birthdays. Not Columbus, but the sweet sixteenth and the 40th birthday of two fair maidens.

Everyone was assigned a team color for the following events.

This was open to all ages, skills, talents and inabilities.

The instructions were given by the birthday mom.

Venison, turkey and pig were on the menu.

Merlin participated in the gluttony before, during, and after the games.

Everyone was assigned the name of a famous character on their back to guess.

History was taught, learned and distorted throughout the day.

Working and Homeschooling...Ten Things

Three Thinking Mother's discussed working while homeschooling. Because I worked this week, I am a little late jumping in. Stop by and see how other's live, survive and thrive as a working homeschooling parent.

I sell real estate for a fantastic company. I am a new agent with one completed sale, a few listings and a few buyer clients. So far my clients have been very flexible and I have been able to work around our daily schooling.

This topic is near and dear to my heart. As a homeschooling mom who has recently started working, I don't have years of experience working while homeschooling, but I have a few months under my belt. And a few thoughts about it. Like ten. That's why it's called ten things. It's not that I don't have 11 or more, it's just a way to stop myself from rambling.

If you don't have to work while you are teaching your children at home, find your husband, give him a big kiss, and thank him. I did not realize how great I had it until it was gone. I look back at my past schedules with jealousy: Bons bons, history read alouds, phonics, field trips, and fun. And more bon bons.
When you have to work, it forces you to manage your time more effectively. Staying up late reading or blogging will leave you too tired to cope with the extra pressure. Bedtime is my welcome friend now, while my blog is oft neglected. I have cut back on outside commitments, I don't jump in to volunteer as quickly as I used to. And I don't feel guilty about it either.
Since my boys are older, they know the drill. Wake up, begin their independent work. As soon as I return from my morning meetings 2 to 3 days a week, they make sure they ready to work with me. If we don't begin a subject until 4:30, we don't sweat it. We work odd hours now.
I think it has been a blessing on our grocery budget. I have less time to run out to the store. Less time in a store has proven to cost the consumer less money. Unless the Gman goes shopping, we make due with what we have.
It is possible to do both well, but you must overcome the mind battle. I constantly would like to do more at work, but I force myself to stop and go home. I am faced with the choice of wanting to be the best Realtor, but I know, there will be a time for that later. I'll do my best while I am at work.
One lifesaver for our homeschooling this year is Monarch. Random is taking 5 classes and I can remotely monitor his lessons and correct it from any wi-fi spot. Rosetta Stone is another.
Most of my client research and prep can be done at home. Many days, I am working at the kitchen table, while available for the boys.
I confess, I am insanely jealous of the moms who work at libraries. They have my dream job.
As soon as I started working, the Gman has stepped in to do so many things. Grocery shopping, driving kids and kitchen duties don't threaten him one bit.
I can't say I have made a ton of money yet, but with the Gman's support, I hope to grow this business slow and steady. One happy customer at a time. Do you want to buy a house?

Aletheia Writing Magazine: A review

What is it?

Aletheia Writing Magazine is written for and by teenagers. The contributors are Christian teens who are serious about their commitment to Christ as seen throughout their writings. The issues are packed with various stories, poems, articles and challenges for aspiring writers. Their readership is geared to teens ages 13-19. I felt this magazine would appeal to adults who love the art of writing.

At first glance, Aletheia is a sturdy, glossy 40 page magazine. As I started to read some of the contributions, I realized, these are not your ordinary teens. The insight of the writers and illustrators was impressive. They obviously have a revelation of God. Where do they find these gifted teens? The publisher has wisely included writing challenges and invitations to participate in the magazine throughout it's pages.

The drawings and artwork included in the two issues that I read is incredible. The Christian world has no shortage of upcoming artists. Another feature to be noted is the poetry included. As a mom to only boys, I sadly have not had cooperating students as we study or memorize poems. It's refreshing to see that other teens have crafted words and created great poetry.

If you are interested in a Christian magazine to encourage your budding artist, writer or photographer, give them a subscription as a gift. Perhaps they will rise to the writer's challenge included in each issue. The reward of being published in Aletheia includes their photo and three copies of the magazine to share with friends and family.

For review purposes I was given a hard copy of the fall 2011 issue and a digital version of the premier spring issue. Based on the two copies, I think this magazine will grow in rapidly with new contributors and subscribers. It is a tremendous opportunity for our children. My only disappointment was in my own boys. After reading it, Random was not inspired to submit something. Paperboy enjoyed the fiction stories, but had no interest in submitting his work.

Thrifty Thursday: The habit of thrift

I recall last year when I was awarded the Thrifty Homeschool Blogger Award from one of my favorite blogs, The HSB Post. I haven't written much about thrift lately, but since I just actually met Dave Ramsey while I was in Arizona, I'm fired up again.

My Arizona trip was all about thrift. Some passive and many active thrift activities.

Helping my dad clean out some things from his garage, I found some great clothes for my boys and the Gman. Pops has some stylish cast-offs. I needed to go to a thrift shop to buy a small suitcase on half price day for $7.00 to get the loot home.
When my dad needed a bathrobe and I discovered they weren't in season at Walmart or Ross, I scored one for a whopping $2.50.
We didn't go out to eat much, so there was some thrift. Pops treats so he was the one benefiting from our staying home.
I didn't pay for the Entre Leadership seminar because I didn't want to be out all day. I was able to catch the last hour for free as I waited for the book signing.
I bought my son Entre Leadership by Dave Ramsey, which is in essence an investment in my future.
No souvenirs, but a gift for the boys who stayed home. Socks and a bathing suit, just the necessities. There is healthy competition in the Chandler area. I was able to pick up these things for a fraction of the cost here in my tourist location.
We took the bus home from the airport. With the cost of gas, parking and wear and tear on the car, it was the thriftier choice. We could have hitch-hiked, but that would have been insane thrift.

Once I was home, I was in full gear.

Borrowing the geometry teacher's book and DVD from my Bestie.
Combining my real estate appointments to save gas.
I enjoyed dinner on my boss for our monthly pizza night. Great Mediterranean pizza, and because I don't drink, my tab for a sprite didn't break the bank. I love soda with pizza, but switched to water after one.
I attended a free self-defense class offered by our local real estate organization.
I gave up cream in my coffee. After a few days, I don't notice the difference anymore. Maybe, I'll shed a pound by this tightwaddery.

At the grocery store, I wasn't so successful. Has anyone else noticed the insane prices? Four bags of groceries for $40, Yikes!

What have you done to advance thrift in your life this week? I am always looking for more creative ways to part with less money.

Blogs I love.

The other day I talked about what is keeping me from blogging. Another thing in my life that I miss is reading blogs. I follow many, but lately reading blogs is something that I fit in sporadically.

I know another blogger in real life! I was very excited to hear about a sister from my church who actually attended a Christian writers conference. I had no idea that she loved to write. She shares her amazing story at Spencer's Mom. I have known Robin for years and she is the real deal. Her blog is who she is and what God is doing in her life. I know the people in her story and have seen the transformed lives. Please head over there and meet some of my excellent friends.

Almost all of the blogs that I read are written by women except, The Old Geezer Blog. I have never personally met Ron, but I'd love to have coffee with him. His blog is just plain fun! I have to admit I am insanely jealous of him. His posts always get comments. Insightful comments, encouraging comments and he has a way of drawing his readers into his blog. Another thing about his blogging style is he changes. One day he is funny, the next week he is challenging, and the next week he is talking about culture. I hope you will enjoy the old Geezer as much as I do.

Sunday Musings: 10 things that keep me from blogging.

When you are living the abundant life, you may not have time to blog. I have found that has been the case since last June. Blogging is my favorite hobby, but somehow life has squeezed most of my time. I know it is just a season, but I do miss writing. When speaking with my sister-in-law, she was surprised to hear I was in Arizona, I hadn't blogged about it. That's pretty funny. She must have thought I have been living an uneventful life, if she had to read about it here. Here's the update of the things that get in the way of blogging:

My husband has been declared cancer free, we won't be going to the doctors for a while. Praise God!
My training is complete, so I won't have anymore classes. It's a good thing, because I think I have used up every available brain cell.
I am actually a working Realtor with clients and two listings. I sold my first house last week. When I went to the home with my friends who bought it, it was an incredible experience. I felt that I was interrupting a holy moment. The somewhat newlyweds were in love with their first home together. It really blotted out all of the memories of the frustrating delays.
Homeschooling high school students is not for the faint-hearted. I am correcting work and teaching my boys at odd hours. I don't remember a bit of Biology, so I am learning right along with Paperboy.
I am in Arizona to be with my dad as he recovers from surgery. No vacation, but I did sneak off to Ross for a few minutes. I'm not sure when I will be home. I have only been in the pool once. I hope to remedy that this week.
Preparing for my trip was enough work in itself. I did bring Paperboy along with me. I am enjoying the one on one with him as we have our "meetings" as I go over his work.
This summer, I made a point of getting to the beach as much as possible. My iPhone made it possible to work from the beach. I also survived the summer with very limited internet, long story, another blog post.
I have realized how easy I had it when I didn't work outside the home. I was spoiled. I have to admit, if I didn't have kids at home right now, I would enjoy working. I have some great colleagues.
My teens do not drive yet, so I spend more time in the car than I wish.
Since my sweet husband has sent me here with his blessing, as soon as I get back, I won't be blogging for a few days. I'll be spoiling him.

The Shunning: A Movie Review and Giveaway

Years ago, before homeschooling, career, and chaos, I had the luxury of endless reading. There was enough time to enjoy Christian fiction, and stay up late reading. I particularly enjoyed fiction by Beverly Lewis. One book, The Shunning, I recall clearly. I remember scrambling to order the sequel from my local library. It is part of a series, Heritage of Lancaster County.

Beverly Lewis has tremendous insight into the Amish community. She answers frequently asked questions on her web site:

Were you raised Amish?
I grew up an Assembly of God minister's daughter in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania—literally, on the second pew! However, my keen interest in Plain culture comes from a close family connection to Old Order Mennonites. My maternal grandmother—Ada Ranck Buchwalter—left the Mennonite community when she married. Many of Ada's family members were Mennonites, so I had Plain relatives on Mother's side.
I am interested in knowing more about your Plain heritage. How much experience do you have with that lifestyle?
I have lived with Old Order Amish on two separate occasions, while doing continued research on The Heritage of Lancaster County trilogy (The Shunning and subsequent sequels). My connection to the Plain community comes from my mother's Old Order Mennonite heritage. Growing up, I was surrounded by Mother's family at reunions and church gatherings. I remember going to water baptisms and all of us singing without any musical instruments—the rich four-part harmony of voices—happily watching relatives and friends being completely immersed in the Susquehanna River, just as I was baptized later at the age of 12.
What, if any, has the reaction been from the Amish community to your books?
I have received a lot of mail from Amish people. (Some who have been shunned.) Many ask, "How do you know so much about our tradition and culture?" Others from the New Order Amish have requested that I portray their communities, as well, such as Ohio, Indiana, and other states.

My thoughts on Beverly Lewis' the Shunning

Years later, her book, The Shunning was turned into a movie. A good movie.

I am not what you would consider a movie buff, much to the Gman's disappointment. He loves the rare times when I sit still with him for a movie. He even jumped at the chance to watch a chick flick with me. I loved it. Because I had read the book and he hadn't, I knew the secrets. He kept asking me questions about what happens next and I replied in the manner of one who is surrounded by men.

"If I tell you, I'll have to kill you!"

I won't give away any of the ending, but this movie will have you waiting for the sequel or reading Lewis' books if you haven't already.

Our First Day Of School

What do Pioneer Woman and I have in common?

Not much in the kitchen, but we both started our homeschooling this year on the same day, right after Labor Day.

What goes on in our home on the first day of school?

I promise you, it is anything but typical.

For starters, I was up late the night before, finishing up our scheduling. When I laid my head on my pillow the night before, long after the kids were in bed, I had a peace. I knew I was ready. I felt confident in our choices. I felt thankful for God's provision of all of our curriculum.

That peace was short lived. The jarring awakening came at 5:00 a.m. This is not how I planned our first day. There were drunk teenager frolicking in my pool. Thank God, they were not my teenagers. The sudden flash of the pool light scattered them. After the adrenaline rush, I was unable to go back to sleep.

This gave me a head start on laundry, prayer, and housework. Like 3 hours. I would have been content with one.

Random came into the kitchen, I gave him a big hug.

"Welcome to your first day of high school are you nervous?"

He said in his most annoying nerdy voice he could muster, "I wonder if they will like me or think I'm weird?"
I assured him.
"Yes, we like you and and yes, you are weird."

That weird boy sat before Rosetta Stone Spanish at 8:30 a.m. By nine, he had declared his undying love for the program. I am happy to report after day two, the love continues.

Paperboy was ready for his day. Our 'meeting' about his goals and plans for the week created excitement. His favorite line, "Don't worry Mom, I can do this." And he did.

By the time we started his Biology, the doorbell was ringing.

It's the repentant nighttime pool guest. He began apologizing profusely with a bouquet of flowers. All is forgiven, yet, I cannot pass up the opportunity to warn him to stop now with the bad choices. "Don't go down that road, you may never find the exit." I have a new person on my prayer list.

Random finished all of his Monarch at 12:30. I am worried already if he needs more challenge. He reminded me it is only the first day. I'll save that worry for tomorrow.

Little Guy doesn't start attending his small classical Christian school until Thursday. He was pleased that Random was free to play early. He decided Spanish is for him after sitting over my shoulder yelling the answers to MY LESSON. Yes, I too, am being schooled. I will be learning Spanish along with the boys.

Paperboy's day was much longer. Daily Grams, Excellent in Writing, Biology, Last year's Algebra, Balancing the Sword, Phonetic Zoo, American History and Spanish. And that's just the first day. Stewardship and Geometry will be added as soon as we get our book. He was plugging away all afternoon, willingly.

The threat of public school has worked for a few days.

It's great to be back in our routine.

Pig Pile: A Review, A Party, and A Confession

As a member of the TOS Homeschool crew, this year I am reviewing many homeschooling products that I have received for free. I am not paid to say nice things about the products, but I am obligated to use the product and share my honest opinions with you. In today's review, Little Guy, my nieces, my nephew and I were the product testers...

What is it?

Pig Pile is a fast moving card game that requires 3 to 6 players. The recommended age range is 7 and up. Little Guy had no problem mastering this game.The first time the kids played while I supervised. It was a challenge for them to catch on, but once they did, they were hooked. They loved winning the little rubber pigs at the end of each round. This game is highly competitive, in order to win each round, the players must be planning ahead. Even with great planning, the new card that is drawn can change all of your planning.

SSSHHH Don't tell the kids.

A little math, probability and logic mixed with a little luck and your child is secretly growing their mind. Plus, there is potential for character growth. My family had to forgive, offer help and work on their sportsmanship for this fast moving game. This game is definitely educational in my book. Just learning the rules took a little patience and skill, but was well worth it.

The Party

My nieces were so hooked on playing, they planned a little pig party two days in a row. The morning of the first party, Joannie showed up with pigs in the blanket for all of the players. They were quickly able to bring me up to speed with the rules and we had a fantastic time. One thing about this game, is it can be rather long. Amazingly, Little Guy had no problem sticking with it for two whole games.

The Confessions:

I loved the game.

I avoided housework in the name of 'blog responsibilities'.

I played fiercely against these young ones, not letting them win.

And I ate one of these pigs-in-the-blanket, before noon.

How To Have A H.E.A.R.T for Your Children...A review

Sometimes the mailman doesn't realize the encouragement he has delivered.

As a member of the Old School House Magazine Review Crew, I am given the opportunity to try new products. I am not paid any compensation for these posts, but I do receive the product for free. I am not required to say nice things about the products, which works for me because I'm not good at pretending to like things anyways.

Sabie said: "It's pretty sad that someone has to write a book about having a heart for your kids".

I wasn't ashamed to admit, after our calamitous camping adventure, I desperately needed a book about having a heart for my children.

After I accidentally gave the book to my rock star, author friend Jan, I realized the universal appeal of this book. It is written by a homeschool Mother, but any mom could benefit from this book. Jan wants the book back when I am finished.

Rachael Carman is a wife and mother and she is passionate about both. She and Davis have been married almost 22 years and they have been blessed with seven children ranging in age from 5 to 18. She has enjoyed speaking and encouraging women's groups for over 10 years.

What's the book about?

This book is based on Rachael's talk she gives to homeschooling parents. H.E.A.R.T. stands for 5 basic principles to strengthen your family.

Heart for God
Enrich your marriage
Accept your kids
Release them to God
Teach them the truth

Her encouragement is not for the passive Christian. She shares from her experience and gently challenges the reader in their relationship with God, their spouse and their children. I love her heart for the mission field. She is not only down to earth, she has her mind set on heavenly things. I carried this book around for weeks and used it as a devotional, digesting it slowly.

What did I think about the book?

I loved it. It is a book that I will pick up again. Racheal Carman reminds me of some of the amazing women that are in my church. I think this book would make a nice gift for a homeschooling mother or new mom.

One of my favorite quotes from the book is:

"Have you ever thought about what you are living "out loud" in your marriage? Do you live like you actually love your spouse, or even like him? Do you live like you are glad you said: "I do"? Five Question Friday: Flip Flops, Stalkers and Christmas Wishes

I haven't played in a while. Blogging has taken a back seat to my crazy life. Tonight, I need to lighten up and blog for fun. If you want to jump in on the blog fun, head over to Mama M.'s and answer the questions below. As always, if you don't have a blog, I'll share my blog with you. Just leave your answers in the comments.

1. Shoes in the house - yay or nay?

Both. I have a great mudroom with shoe trays. The kids are trained to kick off their shoes. But.....as I type I can hear the Gman walking around with his shoes on.

2. What do you call them- flip flops, slippers, thongs, etc?

Flip flops. I am so happy that they have improved since they used to be the rubber painful things bought at CVS. Statue man gave me the most comfy white pair from The Finish Line that I adore. I wish I had a pair in every color.

3. What song are you almost embarrassed to admit you know all the lyrics to?

Considering Random and I were singing this song in the car today, this question made me giggle. The song is "Don't You Want Me Baby", the obsessive stalker hit by the Human League. It was popular when I was a teenager, stop the math in your head right now. I was just shocked that my 14 year old knew it. Which brings me back to Random's name. He usually blurts out random statements. Now, he has moved on to singing quite random songs, in mocking tones of course.

4. What is the best quality to have in a friend?

Faithfulness. 'Nuff said.

5. Do you know what you want for Christmas?

I want cancer to disappear and never be seen or heard of again. Amen.

Irene and I got along fine, Thrifty Thursday, and the Winner

Hurricane Irene didn't disrupt our lives too much.

We spent time at home together.

The Gman was very prepared.

Daddy taught paperboy how to hook up a generator to our electrical panel.

The sticks and debris were cleaned up quickly.

Life is back to normal.

Some of my thrifty actions last week:

Thrifty is not shopping before the hurricane. No chance of food getting spoiled.

Thrifty is winning Red Sox tickets by calling the radio station. Of course, including prayer, faith and singing: Take me out to the ball game. Thanks to God, for my son's birthday gift!

Saying yes! to turkey. My overachieving friend, Jan, dropped off a turkey since she had lost power and had no generator. I'm not crazy about turkey, but anything with enough gravy is awesome! Homemade gravy is easy and cheap!

Cancelling the second Xm radio subscription is thrifty. Our first subscription was a lifetime membership which has more than paid for itself. During the attempt to reorder, the call was dropped and the restart never happened. We decided we could live without a second radio.

What I thought about the movie...............

I rate a movie by it's ability to keep me engaged and awake. My attention can only be held by a lot of action, drama and captivating plot lines. The Grace card had the ability to keep me awake long past my bedtime.

Make sure you have tissues, because it can be a tear jerker.

My favorite feature of this film was the numerous themes running through the movie. It multi-tasked with it's themes. The issues that were addressed while entertaining the audience would speak to any one's heart. Prejudice, bitterness, unforgiveness of others and self, teenagers, financial pressures, and marital strife. It was able to portray these themes while still interjecting humor and even some great music.

The way things were wrapped up at the end was a little incredible, nevertheless, it was a great drama. It was not based on a true story, but many of the characters has striking similarities to people I know in real life.

The movie will strengthen your faith, challenge you and entertain you.

Leary Tales: An Inspiration for Families

When my friend Jan, one of my most faithful blog readers, asked me to review her book on my blog, I was a little shocked. Not that she asked me, but because I had no idea that her family worked together creating this wonderful book. You see my friend Jan is already one of those over-achievers. You know those friends we love but that keep raising the bar. She does everything with excellence. She sews, acts, she's incredibly funny, her house is beautiful, she grows things that don't die, she's a prayer warrior, and she has an amazing faith. I forgot to tell you that she eats as much chocolate as she pleases and is still skinny. And now she is an author who was featured in our local newspaper!

Leary Tales is a compilation of poems written by Jan, her husband, Bob and illustrated by two of her very talented sons, Jon and Ben. They spent their Sunday afternoons together creating these funny poems and drawings. I was amazed at the variety of subjects they wrote about. Knowing this family and reading their book was a treat.

One of my favorite poem and illustration in the book is My Calico Cat. First of all, the painting is beautiful and it reminds me of Sabie's lovable Miss Kitty. The poem fits Miss Kitty perfectly. Jan intricately describes the prey she hunts for. I can't tell you what it is, but it is disgusting! It really invoked giggles for me and Little Guy.

The pictures are a combination of paintings and drawings done while their boys were younger. Seeing the change in their styles was fascinating. There are watercolors, textured drawings and cartoons. These boys have been gifted, it will be interesting to see what direction they go in after college.

This book has poems for all personalities. Baseballs, penguins, birds butterflies, golf and a day in court are visited in such unique ways. "Spenderella" about a wife who loves to shop is one I can't relate to, but it leaves me wondering who can he be talking about? Their rendition of "Now I lay me down to sleep" has a delightful, humorous ending.

Friday's Five Fave, the Ingrate Repents

My newest blog follower Robin, I really enjoyed her blog, don't miss this post she wrote. It encouraged me to get out of this funk that I have been dwelling in. I love the title of her blog, I can relate to her blog button. If I decided to rename my blog, it may be something like ice cream on my elbow. Each time I sit at my table, I seem to get stuck on the remnants of some child's sticky treat.
My internet connection. I have been working on some posts at my local library. My creative juices get frozen when creepy men try to read over my shoulder as I type away on my laptop.
Being part of the Old School House Review Crew. I am reading a very timely book right now. I thank God for providing me with some spiritual meat to digest. No bones have been caught in my throat, but it is challenging me, cough, cough.
Central Air Conditioning. The Gman says you should never live where the temperature falls below your age. While that makes sense, I feel that until a woman is post menopausal, that is just plain foolish advice.
My Friend Shirley. She always lends an ear to me and a few books. She has been a blessing no matter how whiny I am. I have always believed we need one friend who we can dump all our garbage on, who doesn't screen her calls. I am thankful she still loves me and answers her phone.

This post is part of a meme called Friday's Five Fave. I really don't like to play favorites, my list is just some of the things that I am thankful for. I have to admit: Lately I have not felt very thankful for much. My eyes have been focusing on the things in my life that I wish were not there. But it's time for the pity party to end and get back to the joy of my salvation. My desire to be in the will of God must resist the spirit of self pity.

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Wherever I turn, I see the people I love being excellent. Most of my friends have amazing gifts and talents. Because they are strong believers, they are led by the gift giver, God, to their talents. I have seen them nurture their skills and grow incredibly.

I spent the evening with my friend Jan, who wrote a book, look for my upcoming review. And Sabie, who plays piano, paints, runs a nursing home ministry, mentors inmates, runs a book store and grows beautiful flowers.

And then, I came home to my laptop. I remembered to visit my friend Vika's new blog. Yes, Vika who speaks 6 languages while I am still mastering English. The one who is an amazing Mom. Yes, she takes pictures. Even the ones she takes of me, I can tolerate. She has an incredible eye and she enjoys every minute of it. She has taken her passion and turned it into a part-time career, when she is not doting on her little blessing, Polli.

I'm so impressed with the friends that God has blessed me with. I'm hoping the excellence will rub off on me. I am always amazed at what God does in the lives of His children.

The Not So Happy Camper

In case you were wondering if my blog has joined the ranks of inactive blogs, you can stop. I've been busy being an unhappy camper. Literally.

We have a very nice tradition in our family. Every year we camp at beautiful Nickerson State Park in Brewster, Massachusetts. The excitement of this trip begins in the snowy month of January. I say that because you have to make your reservations 6 months in advance. The process took me about 5 days to secure one of the best sites(in my opinion) in the park. Each morning at 9:00, I would line up our laptops and frantically click on sites trying to be the first to reserve the coveted sites. Why?

I don't really know.

I do know.

I am a mommy to 4 boys.

They need to camp. Their friends need to camp.

They need to inhabit the woods for a few weeks.

They need to commune with nature and get very dirty.

They need to conquer the mosquitoes, the fish and build fires.

Normally, I am enjoying all of these things alongside them.

This year, I am not a happy camper.

Perhaps it was the babies crying in the night, no the toddlers crying during the day. I felt like crying.

Maybe it was the weird boy peeking in the windows at the showers.

Or the sunscreen that didn't work.

Or the mosquitoes that worked overtime..

Or the man who had to land his catamaran right on the beach where we were swimming.

Perhaps, it was the boys bickering in the tent.

And the smelly fish that were caught.

And the stifling heat.

And the torrential rain which I missed..

I missed my blog.

And my bathroom.

And my husband, who was called away to work.

Then I was called away to work.

I was thankful to be needed elsewhere.

My air-conditioned office became my safe haven.

The urgent needs of others delivered me from my vacation in the woods.

I decided working isn't so bad.

Camping, I will give you another chance next week.

I know, I am a glutton for punishment or someone with serious short term memory loss.

It's for the children.

I'll keep telling myself that.

I am redefining myself by the moment.

I think I'd enjoy glamping.

The good, the bad and the ugly

Good! I live in a serious tourist town that normally frowns upon flashy attractions. Bad! They approved this one on the road leading to the transfer station a.k.a. the dump. Ugly! Yes that is the first ride you see as you drive up. Very Ugly!

Good! The nice man that held the whole line up so we could get this photo shot!

Bad! The speed at which my iPhone snaps pictures. It does not keep up with the action here. Where are the kids?

Ugly! Yes this ride is super ugly. It does not fit in with the historical New England town I live in.

Good! The obstacle courses were a good way to add some competition to the day.

Bad! Sometimes they picked up so much speed they fell out onto the hard ground.

Good! The was a great variety of sports themed rides.

Ugly! There were no seats for the parents to sit while they waited a mere two and a half hours..

Good! The cousins took turns winning the races.

Bad and Ugly! My finger in front of the lens ruining my great shots.

Good! The way my kids are sleeping so soundly right now.

When I married the Gman 19 years ago, I was practical.

I picked everyday dishes that would match everything.

Yawn. White. Boring. Practical.

The dishes of a young bride who lived in a rented house, with boring white walls.

Sometimes boring is reliable. Boring is faithful and steady. It may not be exciting, but it lasts. Like my dishes. Through four boys, four moves and possibly 21,000 meals. The plates have a few chips, some gray scratches from the silverware, and a few haven't survived the unloading and loading in the hands of the little men here.

But my faithful friend has replenished my supply. She has brought newness to my old friends. This is a box that my BFF Shirley collected for me.

She's a faithful friend. She thought of me while she was out thrift shopping. She went the extra mile. She scrubbed the marks off of them. I am thankful to have such a friend.

Overcoming Challenges and Tips for Starting the Feingold Diet

There are so many challenges to starting the Feingold Diet. Actually, any diet takes a certain amount of effort. Flashback! Years ago, when my honey was on the Zone diet, I felt like a personal chef to the stars. The amount of chopping, peeling, planning and procuring of the right foods was an enormous effort. When I found out about his stash of snickers bars in his truck that were sabotaging my daily efforts, I quit facilitating the diet. He was undermining my efforts. Feingold is similar.

You are either on or off, there is no cheating.

Straying from the menu can be a major hindrance to the Feingold diet. My first weeks were often interrupted intentionally and unintentionally by myself and others. Little Guy was a good sport when we found ourselves out without the right foods. He learned to wait to eat or settle for a few choices. I kept a lunchbox with me, but at times, I forgot. It took constant planning, one thing that I am not so great at.

In order to see if the Feingold diet is working, you must strictly adhere to stage one. Eventually, you add more fruits and vegetables in. You never return to artificial flavors, colors or preservative. After a while, your taste buds change. You don't even enjoy the chemicals. You can taste the odd additives.

Giving this diet my best effort was the only way to go. I had many factors working against me.

I had older children in the house that weren't excited about the loss of their chemical laden junk cereals.
We are a family that is serious about our ice cream consumption.
Cooking is not my passion. Notice the lack of recipes and food photos on my blog.
As an avid couponer, I discovered most of the foods we were buying were not acceptable on this diet.
Little Guy had a very narrow list of foods he ate. His sensory issues, affected his eating. Too lumpy, grainy or just the wrong texture meant he would have none of it. He had a very limited amount of choices, initially.
Everywhere we went, people offered us candy or snacks. I started to hate the bank and the library.
Well meaning friends and family assumed some things were o.k. They weren't.

By joining the Feingold Association, you are given all of the tools and support to make it a success. The initial packet comes with instructions, recipes, specific instructions, a food list, a fast food guide and a supplements list. They have an online forum which is frequented by families that have been on the diet for years. They are so willing to help everyone out. You can also search the archives for older posts. It is a fantastic resource.

There is a regular newsletter, email updates, and each year, they create a new food guide that is growing every year.

Ten things I do to make this diet easier:

We shop online at Vitacost for healthy snacks. I buy in bulk and they are shipped directly to my house. This saves me time and lots of money. Their prices on organic snacks and granola bars are the best.
I bake cookies, brownies and rice krispy treats and freeze them, after I wrap them individually. When I am heading out for a gathering, I throw a few in our lunchbox. That way, at birthday parties, when the cake is pulled out, I bring out his chocolate.
I tell friends and neighbors not to feed my boy. He is is trained also to say "No, thank you." Or he asks permission from me before he eats something.
I buy gum, candy and approved 'smore supplies. I always have these on hand. This prevents the feeling of 'missing out'.
We don't do much fast food, but I have discovered some chicken nuggets and fries that are acceptable. If our family dinner contains unapproved foods, I have stocked up on canned soup. I also freeze individual portions of his favorite, split pea soup. I always have some easy meals available.
Every few months, I read the food guide and highlight the products that are available. It jogs my memory and keeps us from falling in a rut with the same meals.
Any time I trek to Boston, I make it a point to stop at Whole Foods. They have 100's of items on the diet.
I evangelize for the diet. I think many people are not aware of the affects of dyes and preservatives have on children. I now have some friends that have nixed the chemicals. It's easier to visit and have play dates, when we share the same foods.
I initially started it during the summer when so many great fruits and vegetables were at their peak and reasonably priced.
I talk with little guy about the diet. He is aware of his life before and after. A few times he has expressed sadness at missing out on some foods. Lately, it was the KFC, that his brothers ate. Overall, he is very co-operative. My fast food alternative is below. I can bake these nuggets and fries in 8-10 minutes at home.

When I feel challenged because of the cost of quality food, I remind myself, the most important thing. Even our worst day on the Feingold diet, is ten times better than our days before Feingold. That is priceless to me.

Fairy Tales, Food Diaries, and Feingold

My last post was a story about this really nice mom who was doing the best that she could to figure out how to parent her little boy who had SPD and a host of other problems. The most frustrating thing for her was the inconsistency of his behaviors. One day everything would be peachy smooth, not a ripple in the day, her little guy was charming, articulate, obedient and talkative. The next day, she likened his behavior to a feral kitty. He was out of control and a danger to himself and others. She did the only thing she could. She brought this to her heavenly Father, not her cool earthly dad, because he was just as puzzled as she. She remembers clearly being led to keep a diary.

It went like this. Dear Diary (not really, I just added that for effect):

The diary included everything this mystery child ate, drank, slept, eliminated and any other pertinent information. The diary made her more aware of the 'triggers'. She was starting to see patterns. Like o.k. maybe the cold section of the grocery store should be off limits, also the soap isle. But it wasn't until the fateful day of the pool party that she realized what was really happening.

Friends brought over food. She was so was busy enjoying the company, she didn't pay attention to what the little guy had eaten. After the party, where she had foolishly assumed he would eat his lunch, she asked the question.

"What did you eat today?"

"I had some eclairs. The little ones."

"How many?"

"Six."

These are not chemical laden eclairs,
they are homemade by Joe Pastry.

Fast forward 24 hours later. He was curled up underneath his rocking chair crying. His first and last time babysitter was acting a little nervous. "How was he?" Amazingly patient babysitter was afraid to admit how misbehaved he had been. Little guy was not making eye contact, couldn't coherently answer any questions and was withdrawing from everyone. He was blubbering like a baby. She was trying to figure out: How can a four year-old child be so miserable? Why is he unable to get a handle on his emotions? This is a child that is loved and adored by his brothers and his parents. Why is he so filled with rage?

That is when she had her light bulb moment! And where she started to sound like a kook. Those eclairs that are sold by the big box stores, have a shelf life of about 3 months. They are laden with preservatives. His little body is being affected by the preservatives.

Starting Feingold after this was a no brainer. Patient husband and the mommy knew even if it did not work, removing chemicals and preservatives from his diet was still a great idea. She felt it was like the Hippocratic oath "Do no harm." Patient husband and she were not concerned about the level of work it was to begin the diet. They were desperate.

The first few weeks were rocky. He was literally detoxing. When starting the diet, any time an unapproved food was eaten, it was like being back to square one. The first week, orange sherbet was eaten while mom was outside. She was heartbroken. She killed her grocery budget. Her shopping trips lasted a few hours as she studied her food lists. She wasted oodles of money trying to find a multivitamin without dyes and chemicals. She loaded up on watermelon and Fritos. She didn't want him to feel deprived. She even found gum and lollipops that were all natural and approved. Anything to make the diet easier.

Then there was a glimmer of hope. A few weeks later, they were visiting with friends. While making sidewalk chalk pictures, little guy drew the most adorable Yoda. Another boy came over and crossed it out. Amazingly, her little boy didn't freak out, he didn't try to bite the other kid or wreck the other boy's drawing. He actually handled it well. It was his peace loving older brother who almost lost it at the injustice. She wrote it down. She had good report. Each day she noted more improvement. Things were less chaotic, but they were still off.

After a few months, he returned to the preschool that he had almost been kicked out of. A teacher asked why was he so calm with an accusatory look. The little boy's mother quickly said "He's not on drugs." She shared about the diet and thankfully the school co-operated. At last they got the know the boy he really was. The year before, their interactions with him were simply to manage his behavior. After the diet, they realized what a bright, sweet boy he was. It was encouraging to have others witness the transformation.

She realized how much food is intertwined in the daily living. She had a new persona, the food Nazi. She never left the house without extra snacks. She had to be on guard for the people who lovingly offered non-feingold food. It was a full time job. She was able to look at his behaviors and ask her husband what did he eat. It was like a measuring stick. If she suspected he had eaten the wrong foods, she was usually right.

After a few months she noticed:
He no longer flapped his hands.
The guttural moaning had stopped.
His eye contact improved immensely.
His speech and language had always been great, but it increased dramatically.
The night terrors disappeared.
He obeyed a majority of the time.
His aversion to textured foods went away.
He stopped biting his brothers.
His gait improved.
Grocery stores, libraries and large gatherings became manageable.

After a while, his improvement leveled off. She decided she wasn't satisfied with the progress. After seeing the effects that Sprite had on his ability to keep his feet on the ground, she next eliminated high fructose corn syrup. After about a month of that, many of the SPD symptoms were gone. The behaviors surfaced rarely, when the wrong foods were eaten or when he was overtired. Then it was like a magnifying glass for his symptoms.

After 9 months:
His re-evaluation showed no eligibility for special school services.
His mother dug herself out of her depressing funk and started getting out more. She always carried her trusty lunchbox with her. She was not embarrassed to bring her own food to a restaurant for him. She was just so pleased they could go out in public.

She stopped writing in her diary.

She is so thankful to God for finding this program. She became a voice to share it with others. Just like the Gospel, some rejected it, some embraced it. Next post, she will discuss the tips for implementing the Feingold diet.

Snake Oil, Prayer and Feingold

A Modern Fairy Tale...with a happy ending.

Once upon a time there was a woman who had a degree in early childhood development. She had years of experience teaching children, potty training children, birthing children and raising children. She and her amazingly patient husband were blessed with a 4th little boy. This little boy always seemed "different" from her other children and her friend's children. She was puzzled. She tried everything in her power to figure out what made this child tick, explode or find joy. He had numerous quirks about him that were affecting her whole family. He cried at every bath, grocery shopping trip, in cold weather, in loud noises, and was generally miserable throughout the day. He was angry, he bit people, he pulled hair, cried randomly, potty trained late, avoided eye contact and had many repetitive behaviors that worried his mother. Mealtimes were mini-nightmares, food was everywhere but in this child's mouth. She wondered, would he ever grow out of his highchair? His mother prayed, read books, sought out experts, asked friends, and endured months of what, why and how to deal with this?

Her best coping method was agoraphobia. It was much easier to never leave the house. That got old very quickly. Her husband was a skilled shopper, at least they had food. Going to church was a major effort. They always sat in the back row, in case they needed a quick exit. Getting babysitters became a rare event. Dates with her husband were reserved for really special times, like anniversaries.

After reading numerous books and eliminating autism, she finally found a name for this: Sensory Integration Disorder or Sensory Processing Disorder. The names have changed, but the symptoms are similar. This little boy's nervous system reacted differently to external stimuli. Cold, heat, pressure, noises, and transitions caused him to loose control of himself. Things sent him into fight or flight, which put him in danger daily. His worried mother learned to navigate the triggers that brought upon the 'melt downs'. She and her husband prayed. They were desperate. They were seeking out what was best for this child. Did he need expensive therapists? Did he need a special classroom? Did he need medication? Could we cast this out in prayer? One thing his mother did know, is she didn't want to fall for any false cure or 'snake oil'.

When the neurologist suggested further testing for the alphabet soup diagnosis that he suspected, she balked. The thought of her little 3 year-old in the hands of psychologists and therapists for a total of 9 hours, just didn't put her at ease. When her pediatrician recommended counseling, she lost faith in him. She couldn't grasp how any 3 year-old could be counseled not to have outbursts. She knew if she could talk a three year old into not behaving a certain way, she'd be on Oprah. She would be famous and sell millions of her books about how to make your three year-old obey every time.

She argued with insurance companies, and eventually realized: Just like when she took her older children's education in her own hands, she was on her own with this, too. After learning about the benefits of occupational therapy, she faithfully did activities from the books, The Out of Sync Child and The Out Of Sync Child Has Fun. She religiously gave him omega oils. She was rigid about sleep times and getting outside for fresh air. She enrolled him in a private preschool as not to isolate him from others. She never denied that there was something going on, yet she held him to a standard of behavior. She didn't use his 'issues' to excuse his numerous mischief exploits.

She bit her tongue when well meaning loved ones said, "He's just a boy." She knew boys, this was more than a boy issue. Admitting that your child has something wrong was scary and liberating for her. Naming the elephant in the room was the first step in getting it out. This elephant began controlling her life. Every decision, plan and move made was done in light of "will this work around the elephant?" Her faith and determination were not enough. Something had to change.

With all of the efforts she was making, she still felt, she was going backwards. Why were some days great, while others made her want to curl up in a ball and cry? She started to have a vision for the future and it wasn't hopeful. At times, she found comfort in the word of God. 2 Timothy 1:7 was her promise. She had a little hope, but still some rough days.

She came across a homeschooling forum with a post discussing a diet called Feingold. Some posts strongly talked against it. Some couldn't say enough about it. She went to the website and began reading the first fifty pages of their book for free. Because she was too cheap to order the book, she found it at her local library.

It took some humbling for her to even check the book out; "Why Can't My Child Behave? by Jane Hersey. She was a Christian mom who believed in training her children in godly character. She was a failure in the first few years, no parenting tactics worked with this little one. Nevertheless, she devoured this book about allergist Benjamin Feingold and his discovery of an allergy diet that helped children with other problems besides food issues.

Are You Out of Gas?

After I left the used curriculum sale today, I noticed in the middle of an intersection a car stalled out. It's owner was on the side of the road texting. Apparently, she had run out of gas. She wasn't the first out of gas driver I have seen lately. With fill-ups costing $40 to $60, it's easy to postpone the dreaded trip to the gas station.

I thought about our used curriculum sale. There were so many great resources available. It was like a gourmet meal. The tables were filled with so many expensive, excellent resources priced fairly. It was a tightwad homeschooling mom's dream. Yet, not many were partaking. Why?

I thought about my homeschooling experience. When the spring of 2011 approached, I ran out of gas. I was in need of a major tune-up, an over haul and basic maintenance. But that cancer, a job, outside commitments and life had a way of keeping me from filling up. I was like the girl on the side of the road. I waited too long to refuel.

I thought about the things I chose to do to keep my engine running. It was one of the main reasons I passed by those bargains on the tables today. I have to be picky about spending my homeschooling fuel. There isn't as much in my time budget as there used to be. I need to spend and travel wisely.

Thankfully due to these few changes, my engine will keep running.

I enrolled Random in Monarch from Alpha Omega. The tracking of his progress and accountability has already re-energized both of us.
I have planned Paperboy's school year with classes that involve less of me.
For the first time ever, we will be doing school over the summer. This will free up time for unexpected non-school days and keep us ahead of schedule. It will also give paperboy more time for his electrical apprenticeship. This is a radical change because I live for beach days.
We will be doing literature based history over the summer. Using Truthquest guides and Read for the Heart, our whole family will study American History together.
Plants Grown Up and For Instructions in Righteousness will be our summer devotionals. Balancing the Sword and Apologia will be shelved for the summer.
Growing Healthy Homes will be a family affair. The summer fruits and vegetables available makes it the perfect time to cover this in depth.

I have been awarded the versatile blogger award. That's the nice way to say, you blog about a variety of subjects. I used to try to stick with mostly homeschooling topics, but my blog is so much more than that now. I am working on some Feingold posts, some reviews, and some how-to's for homeschooling. I have some half-written posts in my drafts, just limited time in front of the computer.

But this was a special surprise. I am copying and pasting from Savannah at Ramblings of a Christian Mom. She's a kind soul who reads my blog, she awards me, and sent a sweet email. Not only is she versatile, she is color co-ordinated. Her blog matches the award.

A Versatile Blogger is one who.........

Now, I have to say, I do provide variety. About # 2, I think I may intrigue my readers, perhaps they say,"What is she really talking about?" No doubt, I am continuing to grow as a blogger. This sedentary work has influenced my pants size. But really, Savannah probably noticed my first vlog yesterday. That's true blog growth.

I tried to follow most of the rules, I linked back to Ramblings of a Christian Mom. I'll share 7 secrets about myself. Even though they won't be secrets after I share them.

I used to sing with all my heart when I was alone in the car, now I enjoy the silence.
I secretly hate grocery shopping. If I never had to do it again, I would be so thankful.
I loved my real estate job until 3 days ago.
I force my children to go to the beach. By July, they are beached out and I'm just getting started.
I throw out annoying toys when my children are sleeping or not looking.
When I heard about the 17 year old boy in China who sold a kidney to buy an iPad, I was disgusted. Then I decided, I could relate to wanting one so bad. I am a technology addict, with some Christian conviction. No iPad for me for a little while.
My dream vacation would be sitting on a beach reading.

Now to nominate 10-15 bloggers will take some effort. I am going to wait on that one. I'm breaking a rule and it bothers me a little. But not enough change. Here's three: The Common Room, Rural Revolution, and Footprints in the Butter.

Blogging, Vlogging, and Name Changes

One thing I learned at Bloggy Boot Camp was to start vlogging. Well, I am much too shy for that. Instead I talked my ghostwriter into it. Little Guy is seven years old and does not want to be called Little Guy anymore. What should I change his blog name to? Maybe the poet, Shakespeare, or C.J.

Kahn Academy: Free Online Classes

It seems like I am always the last to find out about so many excellent resources. Perhaps one person who reads my blog, will be introduced this most excellent site. Below is an overview of the Kahn Academy.

Random and Paperboy will be spending time this summer on this site. Since Random has discovered he loves online learning, thanks to Ten Marks, he was excited when I shared this with him. I like the idea of short videos, they are 10 to 20 minutes long. Just enough time for the brain to absorb the concept, but not to start the eyes glazing. I'm learning about the banking system and I haven't dozed yet.

This is not just videos, there is an area on the website where student can practice concepts, receive badges, while being tracked by their coach, me. As the coach, I can even see exactly which problems they struggled with, needed more help, and how much time they spent on it. Knowing exactly at what point in the math lesson the student begins to struggle, is invaluable as their teacher.

The instructor Sal Kahn began Kahn Academy, accidentally, by tutoring his cousins. He created videos to enhance his lessons, posted them on YouTube and it grew into an amazing library of instruction. He realized there was a need for this type instruction. Now he shares all of his lesson for free at his website. His story is incredibly inspiring.

One thing that really impressed me is the equipment he uses to produce these videos only cost him $280. The potential to help others is priceless.

Wrapping up reviews: My Top Ten

This was my first year being involved in The Old Schoolhouse Review Crew. What a great adventure it has been. I am thankful to have applied to the crew, since it was the catalyst to discovering my passion for blogging. To be honest, when I first began reviewing products for the Old Schoolhouse, I was challenged. I felt like I was back in school writing a book report. I wanted to share my experience, yet not sound like an infomercial. Working with teen-aged boys, while trying new things, had it's own challenges. At times, I realized that I needed to use a product with only one child as not to complicate things. Looking back, planning our school schedule around crew reviews actually kept things from becoming dry. I'm thrilled to be returning next year, but also welcoming the summer break.

For those of you who read my reviews, thank you! I tried my best not to be long-winded, but many times, I could not help myself. Forgive me? Thanks!

Here are my top 10 favorites out of the 25 products I reviewed as part of the crew:

Our all time favorite was; Zeezok Guide to the Movies, The Count of Monte Cristo. We enjoyed this activity eBook so much, we picked three more at our local homeschool conference for next school year. I may have to share an unsolicited review about them in the future.
Tenmarks. Not only did I love this computer-based math, my boys have been faithfully using this program. This has done wonders for Random's confidence in math.
Latin Alive. This Latin Program is an answer to prayer. Random will be using it next year.
Apologia: Who is God? And can I really know him. Random has enjoyed this immensely. This is a keeper. Little Guy will be ready for this in a year or two.
Vocabulary Cartoons SAT Word Power. Paperboy will be moving on to the next one in his sophomore year.
Math Tutor DVD's. I admit my nerdhood. I loved these. The muddy brain has been cleared thanks to these videos.
Dig It! Roman Town. Little Guy is hooked on this game and I am o.k. with that. He will definately be very familiar with archeology and history when he studies the Roman culture. Learning through games is powerful.
Read For The Heart by Sarah Clarkson. This book was perfect for me.
Growing Healthy Homes: Nutrition 101. This had to be the Gman's favorite. I think he is hoping I'll use this more often.
Andi's Fair Surprise. I loved reading this Circle C adventure with Little Guy. Most of the products I reviewed were for older students, so this was a rare treat to involve him in our reviews.

Before I even discuss Read for the Heart, I have to make a confession. I am addicted to children's books. I read them to my children, but I do so, because I enjoy them just as much as they do. I am usually the one who gets excited about starting a new book. My kids humor me and eventually they are drawn into the story.

Because of this obsession, I currently own several books about choosing children's books. I have some that describe books that relate to boys, historical time periods, and illustrators. I enjoy reading, talking about and discovering new children's stories. This book obsession started when I was in college. I had taken a course in children's literature, which turned out to be one of my all time favorite classes. From that moment on, I have always been drawn to children's books.

This is one of the only crew reviews of a product just for mommy! I was thrilled to review it and even more excited as I read it. I discovered the author is the daughter of one of my favorite home school authors, Sally Clarkson.

What is it?

Read For The Heart is book that answers the question of why, how, and what books will nourish your child's heart.

With summer reading programs beginning for my kids, this book will be an invaluable tool for choosing excellent books. Little Guy has just begun easy chapter books, so I have started the adventure in fiction for the third time with my kids. I am now armed with an excellent resource that covers over 1000 books.

Sarah Clarkson begins with the chapter: Reading to Live, the testimonial of how she was captivated by books by her family's dedication to great literature. She was homeschooled by godly parents whose priority of wholehearted training is apparent. Her zeal for books, makes Terri G. seem like a dabbler in reading. Read For The Heart's 12 chapters include:

I appreciate how she added an index, so I can easily search for by book, author or genre. The organization of this book, makes it easy to use. This valuable resource will help me this summer with one of my finicky children.

A few things I discovered in this book.

Christina Rosetti, a Christian poet, was the brother to artist Dante Gabriel Rosetti.
The Wonderful Adventure of Nils is a book I want my sons to read this summer, to become familiar with the geography of Sweden.
Walt Morey wrote more than Gentle Ben. I am hoping my boys enjoy his other works.
Since we have friends from Bulgaria, I am looking forward to reading Dobry by Monica Shannon.
Jane Porter wrote The Scottish Chiefs in 1810. My boys can never have enough of William Wallace. Although it's a famous book, it's news to me.

This book is a thorough reference that has found a new home in my library bag. I was pleased to see that my children have read many of the recommended titles, yet there are still so many treasures to be discovered in Read For The Heart. I highly recommend this book for all families. You don't have to be a homeschooling parent, just someone who desires great books for your children. Don't take just my word for it.
